Youth Service America June 17

Looking for a way to increase participation in your programs while connecting with a global youth service movement?

Apply to be a 2011 Global Youth Service Day Lead Agency (Application Deadline: July 15)

Lead Agencies are local, regional, or statewide organizations across the United States, and the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Ontario, or New Brunswick that increase the scale, visibility, and impact of Global Youth Service Day by leading GYSD in their city, region, or state.

Lead Agencies convene a planning coalition of at least 10 partner organizations that collectively engage at least 600 youth volunteers in service on GYSD, engage local media and elected officials, and plan a high profile signature project or celebration of service.

Lead Agencies receive a $2,000 GYSD planning grant sponsored by State Farm Companies Foundation, travel support to attend the Youth Service Institute, and ongoing training and technical assistance from Youth Service America to ensure a successful Global Youth Service Day.

Past Lead Agencies have leveraged their position as a GYSD Lead Agency to strengthen their programs, form new partnerships, expand their volunteer base, garner media attention, gain support from local public officials, and secure additional funding.

The application deadline is July 15, 2010.

NEWS FROM THE FIELD

New Federal 'Volunteering in America' Report Shows Greatest Spike in Volunteers Since 2003
Despite difficult economic times, the number of Americans volunteering in their communities jumped by 1.6 million last year, the largest increase in six years, according to a report released this week by the Corporation for National and Community Service. The Corporation's annual Volunteering in America report found that 63.4 million Americans volunteered through a formal organization last year, giving more than 8.1 billion hours of volunteer service worth an estimated $169 billion. Previous research would suggest that volunteering should drop during an economic downturn, because volunteer rates are higher among job-holders and homeowners. Instead, volunteering increased at the fastest rate in six years, and the volunteer rate went up among all race and ethnic groups. The complete report can be accessed at www.VolunteeringInAmerica.gov

Add Service to Your Summer Vacations
The idea of volunteer vacations is not a new one. We've also heard them called "work vacations" or "voluntourism" or even "service-learning travel" - but whatever the name, the concept of building short-term volunteer service into vacation time is one that has kept people interested. Whether your free time is spent in your own town, across the country, or across the sea, a volunteer vacation can be a fulfilling way to improve lives and communities while also allowing you to de-stress, broaden your experience, and leave with a sense of accomplishment. The following resources will help you find a way to serve, learn, and relax all in one trip. Find many voluntourism resources in the June 2010 issue of the National Service Resource Center E-newsletter at: www.nationalserviceresources.org/enewsletters (Click on "Current E-newsletter - June 2010.")

EVERYDAY YOUNG HEROES

Roosevelt High School 2010 Senior Class - Boyle Heights, CA

Youth Service America recognizes 110 seniors from Roosevelt High School in Boyle Heights, California as Everyday Young Heroes for their creation of a book about their community and the culture that has enriched Boyle Heights.

When the seniors attending the School of Law and Government, a part of Roosevelt High School, were introduced to the book In Our Village: Kambi Ya Simba through the Eyes of Its Youth, something began and something transformative happened. They took a book written by youth across the globe as a model for their own book - about Boyle Heights.

Teacher Steve Mereu explains, "The 100-page book was created by seniors began last November with brainstorming, and by January students had formed 'chapter groups' in their six 12th grade English classes. Six students volunteered to do much of the peer editing. Another six students took responsibility for the book layout." This process kept students involved and engaged. For teacher Jeffrey Matsumura, "The students broke down the walls of the academic classroom and created a new communal one, one in which their lives, their experiences, and their visions became the focus."

Monica Yoo, another teacher saw her "students as creators through this project, knowing that their voices would reach a real, authentic audience. As a teacher, I was challenged and inspired. The drafting and editing process has never been more real in my classroom."

One look at this book and you know immediately that the work was hard, dedicated, and developed the skills and knowledge youth need to move into their communities as participants rather than spectators. Their stories are rich, their insights profound, their care and concern evident. For their creative work and their efforts to highlight their community's history and cultural diversity, we honor these Seniors as Everyday young Heroes.

The Art of Demystifying a Millennial Volunteer
On the Social Citizens blog, Kari Dunn Saratovsky writes: "Having already seen and experienced so much, Millennials have established themselves as a new breed of activists and doers - but for the average nonprofit, understanding how to engage them in your volunteer work can be seen as a mystery. The following is an attempt to demystify the Millennial volunteer. I firmly believe that the problems our local and global communities are faced with call for exactly the values that Millenials believe in - collaboration, teamwork, openness and transparency. So , what does your nonprofit need to know about engaging the next generation of volunteers?" Read the rest of the blog at: www.socialcitizens.org/blog/art-demystifying-millennial-volunteer

Mosquito Spray that works? and is safe!

Mosquito Spray...Worth a try

I was at a deck party awhile back, and the bugs were having a ball biting everyone.

A man at the party sprayed the lawn and deck floor with Listerine, and the little demons

disappeared. The next year I filled a 4-ounce spray bottle and used it around my seat

whenever I saw mosquitoes. And voila! That worked as well. It worked at a picnic where

we sprayed the area around the food table, the children's swing area, and the standing

water nearby. During the summer, I don't leave home without it.....Pass it on.

Youth Council Counsel
This recent blog from Anderson Williams of Cascade Educational Consultants explores effective youth council strategies: "Part of the opportunity and the challenge of working with youth councils (and youth generally) is that we adults come to the game with very good intentions, but too often with very stale models or without a clear vision of what we really want. We have what I call a massive 'intentions-to-practice gap.' ... Effective youth councils are far more complex than we typically prepare for. So, in order to help close the intentions-to-practice gap, and in order to provide better and more lasting opportunities for our young people and therefore more sustainable communities and a stronger democracy, I offer you the following considerations before you start a council or revamp your existing one: ..." Note from MADD

Dear friend,

I just wanted to keep you in the loop on two of our top priorities: the fight to eliminate drunk driving and our efforts to serve victims of drunk driving.

It has been a good couple of weeks in federal anti-drunk driving legislation. Two weeks ago, the House Energy and Commerce committee passed an amendment that would fund research into advanced technology that would prevent cars from being driven drunk for five years. Yesterday, the Senate Commerce, Science, and Transportation passed that same amendment. You can see details here.

In that five years, DADSS, which is a cooperative venture between the automakers, researchers, and the federal government and supported by MADD, believes they will have multiple technologies that will be accurate, reliable, inexpensive, voluntary, passive (that is, we won’t even know the technology is there unless we shouldn’t be driving), and set at the illegal limit of .08 BAC. In short, this technology will eliminate drunk driving.

It looks like we could have this legislation passed by early July. We are also pushing for legislation that would require states to mandate ignition interlocks for all drunk driving offenders; please click here to email your senators about this bill.

For victim services, we have exciting news as well. We have our final tally from all 50 states and, in 2009, MADD served over 57,000 victims and survivors of drunk driving -- one every 10 minutes on average. While our goal is to make sure no victim goes without MADD's services like emotional support, court accompaniment, and other resources, this is a 109% increase from 2003.

All of these services are possible due to your support and the support of people like you. If you'd like to help, your $17 monthly donation can provide that vital first hour of services to someone impacted by drunk driving. Or, if you would like, you can also donate to your local office here.

Thank you for reading and for your support!

Yours,
Laura Dean-Mooney
MADD National President

Reflections on America’s Giving Challenge

For the past several weeks, Beth Kanter and Allison Fine have been evaluating the 2009 America’s Giving Challenge and its role in helping nonprofits to raise funds and engage supporters online. As part of their review, they’ve conducted “living” case studies, delving into the success of various winning organizations, such as Darius Goes West and Students for a Free Tibet, and have shared the secret sauce for winning online contests. In their reflections, Beth and Allison have come to some interesting conclusions surrounding some of the key concepts they were exploring – from the advantages of being a small organization to understanding and appreciating failures. Lighting Fires in Young Minds

Lighting Fires in Young Minds

What does it take to get really good at something?

Dear friends and colleagues,

It seems that everyone's talking about motivation and mastery right now. Malcom Gladwell, Dan Pink, Sir Ken Robinson, and others are all building on the latest research about what drives people to practice for those 10,000 hours it takes to make an expert.

This week--right in time for summer reading--WKCD introduces a critical new element into that conversation.

In our new book FIRES IN THE MIND, just published by Jossey-Bass, Kathleen Cushman has brought together eye-opening insights from close to 200 teenagers who looked at their own lives and learning through the lens of "deliberate practice."

FIRES IN THE MIND--the book and its ongoing blog for teachers and parents--results from a WKCD initiative called the Practice Project, supported by MetLife Foundation. For two years, we drew in diverse students from all around the country to think through its central question, "What does it take to get really good at something?"

Do kids have to be born with talent to shine at math or chess or debate or cello? What draws them in, and keeps them going when things get harder? What's happening at school--or not happening--to light the fires in young people's minds?

Please, drop by http://www.FiresInTheMind.org to hear what students are saying about all this and much more. People are telling us that it's changing the way they look at everything from video games to homework. We hope you'll leave a comment on the blog to tell us what YOU think!

best wishes,

Barbara Cervone, Ed.D., President

Are our kids getting enough math and science education?

Americans are convinced that math and science skills are crucial for the future, according to a new Public Agenda survey that found strong majorities who say there will be more jobs and college opportunities for students with those skills. But while there's broad support from parents and the general public for K-12 national standards, over half of parents surveyed say the math and science their child is getting in school is "fine as it is." Those are among the many surprising realities facing science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education in public schools, according to "Are We Beginning to See the Light?" More than 1,400 individuals were surveyed nationwide, including 646 parents of children grades K-12. more

Tips for Building Assets in Middle Schoolers

What we've done to connect the dots to assets with that age group is this:

1) games and service projects - we use experiential moments, tap into energy and keep them moving and connect activities and experiences to assets through conversations about life. Check out Great Group Games at Search Institute. The book is divided by stages of building a group over time, connects games to each stage, connects games to assets and has going deeper questions to help provide the platform for exploring the assets.

Service - learning provides a great platform for building assets whether you talk about them or not.

2) some of our work in schools has let us connect assets and teachable moments to essential literature and what's going on in the classroom. In Charlotte's Web, for example, we talked about support and the importance of having a network to help you as we created our own web with yarn. We also had a club that worked on their 'math muscles' and at the same time talked a lot about personal power each day.

3) We use the Hidden Treasure of Assets Game (available at Search) to teach youth about the assets directly. That game is a great way to connect between the research and every day real life examples plus it has lots of questions for them to answer out loud about their own lives.

4) As a community, in our Nashville Youth Coalition that Peter Benson helped kick start on the right direction, we've crafted 5 principles of positive youth development that we use as part of our language and vision for what we want youth to experience. Assets fit under each of the principles but it's the principles that we as a community will talk about broadly and then the assets are part of how we get there.

Hope that helps!

Hi Diane

Great question!

Good to hear your Youth to Youth Club are already building assets. It's my experience it's when we successfully engage children and young people in building/enhancing assets in the lives of others that we give them the greatest opportunity to build assets in their own lives. Guess kids are no different from the significant adults in their lives... they achieve their own highest levels of personal development when they're doing something for somebody else.

You'll note I've copied this email to Don MacIntyre, a Jr. & Sr. High school principal in Penticton B.C. Canada who is an asset builder par excellence and has spent years introducing/refining and teaching asset approaches in the lives of students and the educators who influence them. You've now got his email and he's aware of your interest.

Subject: HCHY List: Middle school

I was wondering what other Asset building communities do to build assets in their Middle school. Our school district has a Youth to Youth Club that is definitely asset building but don't necessarily promote it as Asset building. They want to incorporate the Asset principles without naming this promotes Asset # 1 etc. Any suggestions on how to promote the assets in subtle way to get parents, students, and the community to begin to see the corroboration between Assets and the Club?

Any suggestions would be most appreciated.

Funded by Learn and Serve America, a program of the Corporation for National and Community Service, STEMester of Service incorporates YSA's semester-long service-learning framework to engage educators and students in addressing critical environmental needs and connecting them to STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) curricula.

YSA is seeking 10 middle schools with large populations of disadvantaged youth to join 20 returning STEMester of Service grantees. STEM schools must be located in one of the 12 states with highest dropout rates (Alaska, Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Louisiana, Nevada, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, and Washington).

The $5,000 grant (that includes travel and training at YSA's Youth Service Institute in Detroit in October) supports teachers as they engage local partners and guide students in addressing local needs through planning and implementing sustainable service projects that launch on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service (January 17, 2011) and culminate on Global Youth Service Day (April 15-17, 2011).

Applications are due July 15, 2010. Grants will be announced in late July.

Good Intentions: The Beliefs and Values of Teens and Tweens Today

Beliefs and values, and their influence on decision making, have commanded significant media and public attention in the new millennium. What life choices will youth make when confronted with real-life dilemmas? How different or similar are youth on ethics and moral judgment compared to youth 20 years ago?
Good Intentions: The Beliefs and Values of Teens and Tweens Today (2009), a national study conducted by the Girl Scout Research Institute (GSRI) in partnership with Harris Interactive explores what youth today value and how they go about making decisions, based on research conducted with 3,263 3rd to 12th-graders from around the country.
This work paints an encouraging picture about a generation of youth responsible to themselves and to others, and who value diversity, acceptance, and community involvement. It also highlights the important role that adults play in helping girls to actualize their good intentions. America After 3PM Special Report on Summer: Missed Opportunities, Unmet Demand
Summer learning programs are one important way to keep children engaged and learning throughout the summer months, but a recent study released by the Afterschool Alliance finds that the supply of summer learning programs isn't keeping up with the demand for them. Sponsored by The Wallace Foundation, America After 3PM Special Report on Summer: Missed Opportunities, Unmet Demand demonstrates that the nation is missing a key opportunity to help millions of children succeed in school. The report examines data from the 2009 America After 3PM study, sponsored by JCPenney Afterschool, and focuses specifically on summer learning program participation and its key role in keeping children engaged in learning throughout the summer months. The study finds that only 25 percent of school-age children (an estimated 14.3 million children) participate in summer learning programs.
Based on parent interest in enrolling their child in a summer learning program, 56 percent of all non-participating children (an estimated 24 million children) would likely enroll in summer learning programs. Even more data on summer learning programs throughout the country and in each state can be found in the America After 3PM Special Report on Summer section of the Afterschool Alliance website at www.afterschoolalliance.org/AA3PM_summer.cfm

In a community where there are 26 school districts and 1.9 million children and youth, it was important to capture the needs and voices of a single feeder pattern community.
