Urge Your Member of Congress to Join the Youth Drug Prevention Caucus


In an effort to raise awareness about the need for and impact of prevention, Representatives Levin (D-MI/12th) and Bono Mack (R-CA/46th) have partnered to establish the Congressional Caucus on Youth Drug Prevention. This is the first Congressional Caucus ever to focus specifically on substance use/abuse prevention. Kennedy, Green Introduce SAMHSA Reauthorization


Congressmen Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) and Gene Green (D-TX) this week introduced legislation to reauthorize the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA). The lawmakers say that this legislation will make needed improvements to the delivery of mental health and substance abuse prevention and treatment services.

New Study Shows Underage Drinking-Related Hospital Emergency Room Visits Rose 11 Percent Last Weekend


A new study by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reveals daily underage drinking-related visits to hospital emergency departments were 11 percent higher during the Memorial Day weekend than they are on an average day.

How Is Your Community Observing International Day Against Drug Abuse?


For many years, countries around the world have participated in the June 26 observance of International Day Against Drug Abuse (IDADA). Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1987, this day serves as a reminder of the goals agreed to by Member States of creating an international society free of drug abuse. Now, the observance has been gaining steam here in the United States, with several communities already planning activities during the week of June 26.

Social Media Webinar Series Continues June 16


We've all heard the adage that "a picture is worth a thousand words." If that's true, your coalition can speak volumes through photo and video sharing websites. On June 16, 2010, at 3 p.m. EDT, the CADCA National Coalition Institute will continue its social media webinar series session focusing on using photo and video sharing websites to help tell the coalition story. The session is the fourth in a six-part series on how coalitions can incorporate social media into their communications/marketing plan.

A World Without Smoking


The American Lung Association (ALA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) partnered to sponsor World No Tobacco Day this week to bring attention to the harmful effects of tobacco use and highlighting the ways in which the marketing tactics of tobacco manufacturers target women and girls.
